More grist for the mill. In this one, the flack's sin is particularly aggregious, and then she compounds it.

Ouch.

You may be right. I did work hard at relationships, and practiced humility (I had too!) That said, I think that I made some gaffs that might have earned me a more public shaming in this day and age.

There but for the grace of god (and timing) go I.

Gillian: Given that it was Mark Twain who, more than 100 years ago, said, "Never pick a fight with a man who buys his ink by the barrel," I'm not sure the field has ever been tipped other than in favour of the media.

And is it safe to say that the reporters who helped you out in your early days were those with whom you took the time and effort to cultivate a mutual understanding, a professional approach that is the very antithesis of that practiced by the spray-and-pray artists that Anderson condemns?

Well, Francis, I wholeheartedly agree with your summary and argument. My only concern here is the balance of power... it is clearly tipped in favour of the journalists.

All I can say is that I am very lucky to have earned my PR stripes at a time when journalists could not instantly post my gaffs online... I sometimes had reporters call me out for something, sometimes angrily and sometimes with humour, which made me better at what I do. In general, the journalists I worked with in the early days helped to coach me when I stumbled. If, instead, I had been publicly shamed, I am not sure the world (or I) would have been improved by it.

Good post - it's good to see that your agency agreed with the points in Chris' posting. Your post mirrors some of what I said in my previous post (http://prmeetsmarketing.wordpress.com/2007/11/07/pr-spam-ten-points-for-thought/#comment-942)
